Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Dotdeed certificate?
A Dotdeed certificate is an elegant, displayable document that celebrates a domain name you own or have been gifted. It turns your digital property into a tangible keepsake you can frame, display, or give as a gift. It includes your name, the domain, the issue date, and a QR code linking to the domain's claim page.
Do I need to own a domain to buy a certificate?
No. You can bring a domain you already own, or buy a new one through our Domain Shopper as part of your order. It's a great way to surprise someone with a domain gift they can claim later.
How much does a certificate cost?
Certificates are offered in three tiers: Essential, Premium, and Elite. Printing and shipping are quoted live from our print partner based on your destination. You'll see the exact total at checkout before you pay, and there's no credit card required to start designing.
How is my certificate printed and delivered?
Certificates are printed on premium fine-art paper by our print partner (Prodigi) and delivered ready to hang: either framed, or as a print on a wooden hanger. We'll email you tracking details so you can follow the delivery.
What comes with the Essential certificate?
Essential is an A4 (21 × 29.7cm) print on 200gsm matte art paper, hung from a slim natural oak hanger with a magnetic fastening and a hanging cord. It is ready for the wall as soon as it arrives, and you can swap the print later by lifting the magnetic strip. Premium and Elite arrive framed (8×10″, matted and glazed).
Can I gift a domain certificate?
Yes. Gifting is one of the most popular uses of Dotdeed. Design the certificate for the recipient, ship it to their address (or to yourself for a surprise), and the QR code on the certificate opens their claim page — the Registry ID that confirms the claim comes in the confirmation email, which you forward to them.
How does the recipient claim a gifted domain?
The recipient scans the QR code on the printed certificate, which opens a secure claim page with their Registry ID already filled in. There they provide their details to take ownership of the domain. We handle the transfer so they own it directly. If they can't scan it, the confirmation email has the same link and the Registry ID as a backup.
The Registry ID isn't printed as text on the certificate. The QR code carries a private claim link instead, and the confirmation email holds the link and the Registry ID as a backup. Whoever holds the certificate or the email can claim the domain, so keep both safe until it has been claimed.
What happens if a gift is never claimed?
A gifted domain can be claimed for 12 months from the certificate issue date. We email the buyer a reminder at 6 months, at 11 months and a week before the window closes.
After it closes we no longer guarantee the gift can be claimed, and we may stop renewing the domain or offer it for sale in our Bargain bin, after emailing the buyer a notice and waiting 14 days. An unclaimed gift isn't refundable once the window has closed, so if a gift is heading that way, email Fraser@frasergarner.com before the window closes and we'll look at your order. See the terms for the detail.
What is the Bargain bin?
The Bargain bin is a small button on the Domain Shopper where we offer domains that were bought as gifts and never claimed. Each costs 50% of what the original buyer paid for the domain registration, and you get the rest of its current registration period. They're first come, first served: when you start paying we hold the domain for you for 30 minutes. Renewal after that is up to you.
Can I customise the design?
Yes. The Studio lets you choose a theme (Classic, Classic & Gold, Art Deco or Birthday) and a certificate tier, and on Premium and Elite the font, colour and award title, all rendered live as you design.
How long does delivery take?
Delivery depends on the shipping method you choose at checkout, from a few business days for express options to standard delivery in around a week. Live quotes and estimates are shown before you place your order.
